Why Nubania?

Why Nubania? Good question. Let me give you some backstory. It involves who I am, my experiences growing up and going to school, and the things I discovered from my students when I was a substitute teacher years later.

I’ve always wanted to “be somebody” and to have mattered in a positive way. One of my favorite quotes is from Henry David Thoreau. He said, “The mass of men lead lives of quiet desperation.” How tragic and true. I don’t want that to be me and I know a lot of people who don’t want that to be them, either.

When I was a substitute teacher in Florida I had the opportunity to teach learning-disabled kids. I absolutely loved it. These weren’t behavior problems kids – these were great kids. They just had trouble wrapping their heads around some of the things being taught. They would tell me they were being made fun of by the other kids. My response? Don’t worry about it. Those kids will be working for you some day.

Another opportunity I had was being a long term substitute art teacher in middle school. That was probably the toughest and most rewarding thing I’ve ever done in my life. I had 5 classes of 30 students every day and almost none of the students wanted to be there. When I started, I asked the students to write me a letter about anything they wanted. The letters I got floored me. I couldn’t believe the problems they were having and the level of confusion, anger, depression, and hopelessness. No wonder so many students were killing themselves.

When I retired, those experiences kept circling in my head and I decided to create a space where people of all ages could escape to and be someone special. I’ve done my best to offer that in Nubania.com. I’ve tried to create as much freedom as possible to be unique, creative, protected, and “to matter”. I do minimal tracking, I don’t data mine or sell member data, I don’t accept advertising or allow other companies access to my members – at least not knowingly. This is in stark contrast to most social media platforms you’re involved in today.
